A Day of Fun
Go-Karting, Paintballing, and Laser-tag all in one. What more could you want?
Written by Michelle Mannering
When the BajaBoard team was invited for a corporate go karting day at Le Mans Go Karts, how could we resist? At first we thought "well maybe we just get to drive cars and have some fun" or "maybe it's a bit of driving, meeting people, should be fairly casual right?". When we rocked up to Dandenong South in Melbourne, Australia just yesterday, we were greeted with surprise, and an exciting timeline for the day ahead.
Le Mans had fitted out their corporate space with tables, hampers, bottles of wine to give away, and a coffee machine running hot delivering orders. When I spoke to the lady who welcomed us, and asked about the "activities" for the day, she replied with an eager "oh yes! You get to try everything". What was that? We get to do all the cool things this place had to offer? What more could we want... more time is the only thing I can think of.
After listening to a great presentation about the company and the space (we discovered they have 23 acres of pure fun and have been around for 25 years) we assembled into groups to go on a walking tour. Just in the main entrance, they have some amazing toys - check out these awesome cars below. Pretty neat! Our guides showed us each of the events we'd be trying that afternoon and explained this was a competition. Competition you say? Ale and I were up for that! After James and George had to head overseas for work and travel, Ale and I were the lone wolves, the BajaBoard reps. We thought we might need James and George's Project Cars racing skills to win the go karting. If you haven't seen it on Twitter yet, check out the photos of them working... I mean, racing each other on rainy days (wait, shouldn't they be working?).
Tours done, lunch in our bellies, it was time to race and play. The scores for each individual (in go karting, laser tag, and paintball) would be combined with other reps from their companies and a "Corporate Day Winner" was to be determined. I play a lot of competitive sport, so I was definitely up for the challenge. Ale races motorbikes, so couldn't resist anyone beating him either. We were up for it! BajaBoard winners here we come.
First up, we had the go karting. Unfortunately during lunch it rained. Not just a light sprinkle, it poured! We nearly cried 'cause we thought the racing was all over - but not to fear, apparently you can still drive in the rain. All kitted up, and fingers crossed, we headed out onto the track. The rain cleared as we got in the cars, but that didn't get rid of all the water on the circuit. Yellow lights aplenty and drivers spinning out everywhere, it was hard to say if anyone got a clean lap. Just as we were about to get into it and really set a lap time, it was over. Only five minutes of driving, that was it - tough times. We walked away with 4th and 8th places (no prizes for guessing who was 4th there).
We weren't going to let the racing get the better of us, maybe we'd be alright at laser tag! Heading to the next building and suiting up in flashy light packs, we walked onto the laser field, heads high. Again, a short game, but with some cunning team work, and straight shooting we ended up with the top two scores! Not only that, our combined team score was triple the second place getters. Not bad shooting on our parts; I still beat you Ale, ahahahaha!
Now the scores were much more even across the teams. We were told the paint balling could be the decider. Masks fitted, guns in hand, and standing about 10 metres away from individual targets, we shot. Everyone had 20 bullets to hit a dart-like board and the scores were tallied up. Again, individual scores were given and combined team scores too. A surprise to us, we came out first and second again! Beat you by 3 points Ale (heheheh). But it's the team score that really counts. This time our combined score was double second place - I mean, look at these straight shooters!
This wasn't the end though. While we might have topped our group, consisting of 10 people, there were still two other groups with roughly 12 people in each. Each of the groups gathered back into the corporate room for drinks and networking while the judges tallied up the scores. Ale's and my eyes bulged as we saw what was on offer - they had trophies! Since when do companies simply open up all their awesome facilities, put on lunch, give away prizes, and have trophies for their competitions??? Le Mans, that's who. This was the coolest thing we'd seen and we wanted a trophy, even if it was only 3rd place. We thought it'd make a nice ornament in the office. Well I thought we only received bragging rights if you won, but a trophy is sweet. But was it for us?
Anticipation built as the judges took the stage. Prizes were given away for a business card draw - a hamper, a bottle of wine, and a roady case - filled with wine! Congrats to all the winners. But what we all wanted to hear was how well we each did at the 'activities'. A wooden spoon was presented, then 3rd place - it wasn't us. 2nd place was announced - not us either. I figured we had lost at this point and was ready to congratulate all the winners. 1st place was announced...
"And the winner, of the 2017 Le Mans Corporate Day goes too..."
Woooo we did it - bragging rights for us. I was so excited! We jumped up on stage and received our trophy. But that wasn't all. Le Mans presented us with a corporate day voucher worth over $1000!!! We can bring a group of 10 people, now if you know anything about BajaBoard, there are 4 of us. We'll be heading out for a great day of go karting and bringing some of our business partners along for the ride.
Ale and I had an absolutely fantastic time and we'd like to thank the entire team at Le Mans for putting on an awesome day. Your facilities are amazing, your employees are the loveliest people around, your lunch was delicious, and your prizes are pretty sweet. We'll be back soon and we look forward to it. If anyone is thinking of doing a corporate day out, or even just for fun with some mates, you definitely can't go past this place. Check out the Le Mans Go Karts website for more details. Each activity has their own site too. Le Mans Paintball and Le Mans Laser Tag are super fun, guaranteed to impress any of your friends or business partners.
